Revolut launches eSIM in New Zealand

Popular finance app Revolut has launched an eSIM product in Aotearoa New Zealand, letting customers purchase and use mobile data in over 100 countries globally.

The new service — a collaboration with global telecommunications company 1GLOBAL — gives Revolut customers the ability to purchase data plans by country or region. A global plan that covers all 160 countries covered by the service is also available.

The cost of data plans varies by country but starts from NZ$2 for 1GB and Revolut is promoting the new service as an effective new way for Kiwis to avoid exorbitant fees while using mobile data abroad. Roaming charges with some providers can cost as much as $11.50 for just 200 MB of data in some regions.

“At Revolut, our mission is to simplify life for Kiwis. We utilise cutting-edge technology to enhance our customers’ experiences, and our eSIM is a prime example of this innovation,” said Head Revolut New Zealand, Georgia Grange.

“Wherever Kiwis travel, they can effortlessly secure a data plan with just a few taps on their phone, allowing them to instantly share stunning photos from their adventures with friends and family. This solution is a game-changer for those who love to explore internationally, providing a convenient and cost-effective way to stay connected while on the go.”

New Zealanders took approximately 2.96 million overseas trips in 2023. Telecom companies in New Zealand receive an estimated $114 million from roaming charges each year.

How does eSIM work?

eSIM (“embedded SIM”) is a digital version of a regular SIM card that is built directly into a device, like your smartphone, tablet, or wearable device.

While traditional SIM cards are physical cards that are inserted into a device and can be switched out as needed, an eSIM is a reprogrammable technology that can be updated to work with your chosen service provider without removing it from the device.

As it’s a newer technology, eSIM is only available on more modern devices, such as more recent models of the iPhone and iPad, Samsung Galaxy devices, and select Oppo and Huawei devices.

A key benefit of eSIM includes the ability to switch between mobile service providers more easily. This makes it especially useful for travellers who want to use local or regional service providers without the hassle of changing physical SIM cards.
